GRUTTA
María Roy
BARCELONA, SPAIN
Maria Roy is an artist and designer who works with both traditional and experimental craft techniques to explore, understand, and assimilate the world around and under her. Her primary area of study is earth, as a living material that narrates the history, politics, and ecology of its locality. Her works translate the very materiality that the ground itself offers, creating sculptures that intimately communicate the local geographies in which her projects unfold. Researching ceramics as an archaeological medium, Maria aims to recover narratives that connect us with our environment through objects.
She graduated from Arts and Design in Escola Massana followed by a Masters in Material Futures at Central Saint Martins. Her graduation project Hollow Earth has been exhibited on several occasions, and selected for “The London Open” at the Whitechapel Gallery. With a practice rooted in pedagogy, Maria continually leads ceramic workshops; teaching, learning and collaborating with local communities to explore their connection to their geography. Maria has also developed these workshops with larger institutions such as the Miró Foundation, the Jan Van Eyck Academy and Elisava. She is currently lecturing and tutoring at the Degree of Arts and Design in Escola Massana and shares her ceramic knowledge as a technician at La Escocesa.
